Core course material is expected to be used fully and typically includes recorded lectures and reading of select textbooks, papers or book extracts. All students are expected to listen to all of the course lectures and read the required materials. A range of supporting teaching material is also available to students as further recommended learning options.

The module will include the following:
Hebrew alphabet – consonants and vowels; dagesh and other signs; syllabification.
Nouns and adjectives; classification of nouns; construct state; pronouns; prepositions; pronominal suffixes; verbs in Qal – the perfect and imperfect and related forms; participles; Introduction to irregular verbs.

Using technical commentaries

Aims of the Module:

  • To provide students with an introduction to the Biblical Hebrew language.
  • To give students basic skills needed for the exegesis of the Hebrew Old Testament.
  • To enable students to understand and make use of technical commentaries on the Old Testament
  • To provide a foundation for the further study of Old Testament texts in Hebrew.

Audio lectures, guided reading, individual study, and individual support where appropriate. Students will prepare for assignments individually using interactive online learning material. Students are encouraged, but not required, to participate in online theological discussion on the eCampus Forum.

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Parse various verbal parts of speech in Qal (verbs and participles); recognize various nouns and their gender, number and state; recognize various other basic parts of speech including adjectives, prepositions and pronouns and their grammatical functions.
  2. Work with a basic Hebrew-English lexicon and technical Hebrew commentaries and be able to use advanced and critical commentaries and reference works.
  3. Understand some of the fundamental differences found in various English translations of the same text.
  4. Translate basic Hebrew sentences into English and move on to further, more advanced studies in biblical Hebrew and the exegesis of Hebrew texts in a subsequent module.
  5. Engage with critically and academically advanced viewpoints on key aspects of Hebrew grammar.
