Core course material is expected to be used fully and typically includes recorded lectures and reading of select textbooks, papers or book extracts. All students are expected to listen to all of the course lectures and read the required materials. A range of supporting teaching material is also available to students as further recommended learning options.

This module will provide students with a thorough introduction to the genre, text, themes and theological aspects of the letter to the Hebrews. It focuses especially on the exegetical treatment of the text, together with a consideration of the theology of the epistle and its wider theological relation to the Old and New Testaments. An Introductory Exegetical Exercise on Hebrews (1:1-1:14)

Christology of the Letter to the Hebrews

Mankind’s Authority Restored in Christ (2:4-2:18)

Divine Faithfulness and Human Failure (3:1-4:16)

Priesthood and Promise (5:1-6:20)

Melchizedek and Mediation (7:1-7:28)

The Christ and the New Covenant (8:1-10:18)

Representation and Responsibility (10:19-12:13)

Appeal to the Fainthearted (12:14-13:17)

To build upon Certificate-level modules students have already taken in hermeneutical theory and practice, thereby enhancing their existing exegetical and hermeneutical skills.

To provide students with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the New Testament letter to the Hebrews, with a special focus on the exegesis and theology of the text.

To introduce important scholarly literature and key interpretative issues in the letter to the Hebrews.

To provide students with an opportunity to relate theologically the letter to the Hebrews to the wider literature of the Old and New Testaments.

Audio lectures, guided reading, individual study, and individual support where appropriate. Students will prepare for assignments individually using interactive online learning material. Students are encouraged, but not required, to participate in online theological discussion on the eCampus Forum.

  1. Understand and be able to discuss the historical and religious background to the letter to the Hebrews.
  2. Demonstrate a substantial knowledge and understanding of the text of Hebrews and an awareness of key critical issues.
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the genre, themes and theological aspects of Hebrews.
  4. Be able to apply a range of additional, advanced exegetical skills to the study of Hebrews and the wider biblical literature as a whole.
