To provide a programme of study, which offers students deep insights into the disciplines, and methodologies of business and to stimulate a critical awareness of the factors associated with the changing focus of contemporary business practice.

The overall structure of the award moves the students at level 4 and a functional perspective of businesses and their operation within diverse environments through an integrated and more analytical insight at level 5 to a critical evaluative and strategic perspective at level 6, where they achieve a high degree of autonomy as a learner, an ability to deal with complex and ambiguous concepts with the broad field and a capability to achieve a deep insight into selected areas within the field of business management.

The initial modules at level 4 form a foundation for the integrative approach at level 5, which in turn is further developed for the strategic aspects of business and management. This subject progression is complemented by the development of practical, applied skills, embedded within the modules and delivered through the challenges of assessment, group-working, placement, applied research and simulation, all building towards a range of facets which enhance employability. In keeping with this theme students may opt to undertake a placement year (extending the programme to three years in total) in order to gain a greater practical organisation insight through experiential learning.

In keeping with the nature of a general business programme a range of areas are covered, which gives the student potential directions for their applied management project in level 6 and helps to develop opportunities for varied career paths. The set format of the module arrangement ensure that all essential areas are covered and that students are exposed to the breadth of the field. Specific features throughout the course support students in tracking the skills they acquire in addition to the knowledge and understanding areas covered. This is achieved by reflective elements at level 4, 5 and 6 incorporated into the mandatory modules.

The award is delivered in a way that allows completion of the credits within two years of study. This accelerated approach is more intense than would be for a 3-year delivery and gives candidates the opportunity to benefit from migrating to a work situation more quickly and increasing accessibility on financial grounds. Students' progression through levels 4, 5, 6 and to completion will require a high level of commitment and determination due to the pace of teaching, learning and assessment on this fast-track programme.

Applications to the programme are to be made through UCAS Route A.

Entry requirements are:

  • A minimum of 280 UCAS points, of which 200 points must be obtained from GCE and/or VCE A Levels (12 or 6 unit awards), including a grade C in one subject. The remaining points may be achieved from GCE and/or VCE A/AS Levels, VCE double award, or Level 3 Key Skills certification;
  • BTEC National Diploma/Certificate: merit profile;
  • Irish Highers/Scottish Highers: B in 4 subjects;
  • International Baccalaureate: 30 points;
  • European Baccalaureate: a minimum of 70%;
  • QAA approved Access course, Open College Units of Open University Credits.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

The methods of learning and teaching on this fast-track programme are geared to progression and integration through the levels of the programme.  Whilst the programme is structured over a more intense 2 years the learning, teaching and assessment methods follow the undergraduate modular framework.  The individual module descriptors provide details of learning outcomes as well as methods of teaching and learning.  The major forms of teaching methods will be lectures, seminars and workshops.  Other methodologies will be employed as appropriate.  These may include;  directed reading, interactive learning via the University computer network, simulation, case study analysis, individual research, group learning activities,  and presentations.  Industry practitioners will also be used wherever possible, as repositories of up to date, expert knowledge in their specialist or functional areas.  

The Department seeks to deliver varied, high-quality learning experiences, teaching and assessment in order to develop appropriate knowledge and understanding, and to enhance a variety of key/transferable skills.  This is facilitated through the outcome-directed nature of learning, teaching and assessment, in a student-centred environment, which provides incremental opportunities for independent and autonomous learning.

The assessment strategy for this degree will serve three purposes:

  • To test the level of knowledge and skills acquired, measured against the specified learning outcomes, and applied within business
  • To provide the vehicle for modular integration within a business context;
  • To promote teaching to learning, which will assist students in the achievement of academic goals and imbue them with skills and attitudes which will assist in life-long learning.

Assessment will follow the university model of a 4,000 word equivalency per 20-credit module.  Each module will be summatively assessed, with formative assessment also employed throughout.  Student assessment will employ rigorous, objective testing to ensure that learning outcomes are met.

Assessment tasks will grow in sophistication and complexity as a student progresses on the programme.  For example:

  • at Level Four a student may be asked to describe, discuss, compare, and outline;
  • at Level Five a student may be asked to evaluate, analyse, justify, and differentiate; 
  • at Level Six a student may be asked to criticise, synthesise, appraise, formulate.

However, it is expected that students will begin to use and develop critical skills from the beginning of the programme.

Students will be assessed in a number of ways, including essays, industry-related reports, presentations and presentations, assessed seminars, reflective reports, examinations. 

The departmental assessment strategy has been created in accordance to the University's Teaching, Learning & Assessment strategy.

Students completing the BSc Business Fast Track Single Honours programme should meet the QAA's Benchmark document's standards on knowledge and understanding, skills and the assessment strategies. The outcome of Level 6 should be a creative, flexible, skilled graduate student who has developed the skills, awareness and mindset to find, create and develop opportunities.   The graduate will be equipped not simply to appeal to and meet the needs of prospective employers, but to respond to and model opportunities for job and new venture creation.  In addition the graduate will have amassed valuable life skills such as self-awareness, creative problem solving, flexibility, enthusiasm and autonomy, which could be applied in a wide variety of circumstances and contexts that they will invariably face. They will have been instilled with a positive attitude towards critical reflection and emotional intelligence, and they will possess an openness towards seeking out life-long learning opportunities, which may be translated into the pursuit of professional qualifications.

Consistent with the University’s commitment to widen access and participation, the Department has a flexible admissions policy, and encourages applications from mature students and from groups historically under-represented in higher education. The general policy is to look for a good level of literacy, together with proven interest and/or experience in an appropriate subject.

The Department has considerable experience in successfully addressing the practical and learning needs of a wide range of students.  These include mature students, those entering education with a non-standard academic background and those with a wide range of disabilities. 

Equality and diversity issues are embedded and addressed in all departmental modules.  Specifically, those modules preparing students for work in the events industry deal with diversity and equality issues in relation to the management of events.   

Students studying on the programme will benefit from both the operational and academic experience of staff in Business and related disciplines.

Warrington School of Management fully endorses and adheres to the University’s established Personal Academic Tutorial scheme. All students are allocated a personal tutor and are required to attend regular meetings (particularly during the first level). Personal tutors will assist with both academic and non-academic matters. In addition, and where necessary, students will be directed to the Learning Support Services for advice and guidance.

The department has very strong links with numerous local employer organisations, government bodies and a variety of Business based forums. These organisations are utilised in a number of ways ranging from guest speakers, placements to research opportunities for students.
