To enable registered dental practitioners to develop their skills in assessment and diagnosis of endodontic disease.
To enable registered dental practitioners to critically appraise the treatment options for patients with endodontic disease, and successfully carry out the required treatment.
To enable registered dental practitioners to avoid iatrogenic damage during treatment, and to successfully resolve endodontic treatment failures.
To further develop skills and knowledge in endodontology, including the evidence base for new techniques, and the role of the dental operating microscope.
Advanced concepts and principles of endodontics.
Evidence based approach to the on-going development of their practice.
Application of the research process and relevance to their own practice.
Demonstrate self-direction, independence of thought and the ability to think logically and critically.
Access, analyse and process information applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship.
Utilise higher level analytical and clinical decision-making skills.

This programme incorporates the Postgraduate Certificate in Endodontology, which has been successfully delivered at Chester for over eight years. Candidates will be required to undertake three more 20 credit modules to achieve a Postgraduate Diploma, and a further 60 credit dissertation to achieve the MSc Endodontology.
For the Postgraduate Certificate, students must complete the first three modules - NM7900, NM7901 and NM7902 to achieve 60 credits. For the Postgraduate Diploma, students must complete all six modules - NM7900, NM7901, NM7902, NM7903, NM7904 and NM7069 to achieve 120 credits. For the MSc, students must complete 180 credits, including the 60 credit dissertation.
The following modules are exempted from compensation and students must pass all components of the assessment. NM7900, NM7901,NM7902, NM7069 and NM7904.
Be qualified as a Dental Surgeon and have a licence to practise dentistry
Be registered with the General Dental Council (or equivalent regulatory body in own country if non-UK) and have a current annual practice certificate
Be in professional practice or have a hospital appointment for the duration of the programme
Be registered with a Defence Union and possess indemnity insurance with cover at an appropriate level
Be qualified at IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent (if English is not first language)
The programme is written in line with the Quality Guidelines for Endodontic Treatment from the European Society of Endodontology (2006) which represent current good practice.
A range of learning and teaching methods are employed during the delivery of this programme. These include lectures, demonstration, discussion, seminars, e- learning and blended learning, and simulated practice in a skills laboratory. It is anticipated that the Research module will be offered as an e-learning option.
A range of assessment methods are used in this programme. These include a research proposal, essays, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), presentation of cases from practice and a research dissertation.
This programme is intended to enhance the expertise of dental practitioners in root canal therapy.
Masters degrees are awarded to students who have demonstrated:
A systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of their academic discipline, field of study, or area of professional practice.
A comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship.
Originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline.
Conceptual understanding that enables the student: a) to critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in the discipline; and b) to evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them and, where appropriate, to propose new hypotheses.
Typically, holders of the qualification will be able to:
Deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgments in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level.
Continue to advance their knowledge and understanding, and to develop new skills to a high level;
and will have
The qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring: a) the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; b) decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations; and c) the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development.

This programme is unique in the North West and is a result of a collaborative partnership agreement between the University of Chester and simplyendo.
The part time delivery of this programme allows practitioners to continue with their working practice whilst studying, and counts towards the hours required for Continuing Professional Development.
